I lived in Sapporo for 6 years at the end of the 1980s. Since I was a person from the countryside, the city was big enough for me, if not as big as Tokyo or Osaka.

The history of the city itself is short, and I think that people have strong enterprising spirit. I though that people would express everything directly, which, I heard, is the reason for that the divorce rate is high. On the contrary, Osaka and Kyoto are historical in good meaning but conservative in bad meaning, and people there prefer indirect expression.

They say that Sapporo is a city where food manufacturers try to sell new products in advance. I think that its evolution is certainly fast and it’s now culturally different from when I lived. Soup curry, which is now a specialty of Sapporo, did not show any signs of it at that time. All professional baseball fans used to support the Tokyo Giants, but now they are almost fans of the Hokkaido Fighters.
