As the name suggests, the seven-spotted ladybug (scientific name: Coccinella septempunctata) has seven black spots on its red back. It is widely distributed from East Asia to Europe, and now lives in North America as an exotic species. It is the most popular ladybugs in the world.
However, the ladybug in the photo has nine black spots. Ladybugs sometimes exhibit variations of the coloration within the same species, but these are surely different species. The scientific name is Coccinella explanata.
It can be found in the grasslands and coasts of northern Japan, but not so often. It is smaller than the seven-spotted ladybug and its wing edges are slightly flat.
