In 2003, I had a survey of cicadas in big cities in Japan and South Korea. The scenery of the city is rather similar, but the cicadas that scream there are surprisingly different.
Sendai and Seoul had many green cicadas (Hyalessa maculaticus). Since these sound independently, the volume is not loud.
In Tokyo, there are many of the above-mentioned Hyalessa maculaticus and brown cicada (Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata). The latter also squeals alone, and the volume is not so great.
On the other hand, in Osaka, a large black type called Kumazemi (Cryptotympana facialis) closes 99% of the parks in the city. The volume is tremendous from 7:00 am to 9:00 am, which is the main singing time. I have measured it with a volume meter, but it has reached a maximum of 93db.
I have been to Beijing in the summer, and there are many closely related species of Kumazemi in Osaka(Cryptotympana atrata), but I felt that the way they squeal was very quiet compared to Kumazemi in Osaka.
I think Osaka is the most noisy city in the world. I think that, so far, it is number one in East Asia, but if you know a city that is noisier than Osaka, I would love to hear from you.
Recommended places: Osaka City Park (Osaka Castle Park, Nagai Park, Tsurumi Ryokuchi, etc.)
Recommended time: July 25th-August 5th
Recommended time: 7 am-9am on a sunny day, especially around 8:30 am. It doesn’t ring at all around noon. It starts crying again around the sunset time, but the volume is lower than in the morning.
